This glossary covers every term used across the Delivery Checkout documentation. If you encounter a word that is not listed here, please report it so we can add it.


Bucket — In A/B experiments, one of two groups that customers are split into. Bucket A sees the primary checkout setup; Bucket B sees the variant. Assignment is determined by Shipit at the start of each checkout session and remains consistent for that session.

Carrier — The logistics company that physically handles the parcel from collection to delivery. Examples include PostNord, DHL, Posti, GLS, and Budbee. Shipit connects to carriers via the Shipit Catalog and generates labels through their APIs.

Carrier Add-on — An extra service instruction passed to the carrier API alongside the standard shipment request. Examples include doorbell notifications, SMS delivery alerts, and parcel insurance. Not all carriers support all add-ons; check the Shipit Catalog for compatibility.

Cash on Delivery (COD) — A payment method where the courier collects payment (cash or card) from the customer at the moment of delivery, then remits the collected amount to the merchant. Supported by Qliro, Walley, and Kustom checkout providers — not by Shopify's native checkout.

Checkout Provider — The e-commerce platform or payment orchestrator that renders the shipping options in the customer-facing checkout. Supported providers include Shopify, Qliro, Walley, and Kustom. Each provider has its own context format and capabilities.

Checkout Setup — A named configuration that groups a set of shipping options together and connects them to a specific checkout provider. A merchant typically has one checkout setup per storefront or market, though multiple setups can exist for A/B testing or regional variants.

Condition — The "IF" part of a rule. A condition defines a criterion — such as destination country, cart total, or customer tag — that Shipit evaluates on each checkout request. When the condition is true, the rule's action is eligible to fire.

Conditions Match — A setting on a rule that controls how multiple conditions are combined. Setting it to all means every condition must be true (AND logic). Setting it to any means at least one condition must be true (OR logic).

Consolidate — A multi-warehouse mode where items sourced from different warehouses are gathered together before a single outbound shipment is dispatched. The customer receives one parcel with one tracking number. The trade-off is lead time: fulfilment waits for the slowest warehouse to contribute its items.

Currency — The monetary unit used for shipping option pricing, expressed as an ISO 4217 three-letter code. Examples: EUR (Euro), SEK (Swedish Krona), NOK (Norwegian Krone), DKK (Danish Krone), GBP (British Pound). Each shipping option has a single currency; use separate options for multi-currency storefronts.

Delivery Window — A time slot that the customer can select for home delivery, such as morning (08:00–12:00), afternoon (12:00–17:00), or evening (17:00–21:00). Not all carriers offer delivery windows; availability depends on the carrier service selected.

Experiment — An A/B test attached to a checkout setup that splits incoming checkout traffic between two variants: Bucket A (the current setup) and Bucket B (an alternative setup). Experiments are used to compare conversion rates between different checkout configurations.

Fallback Mode — The behaviour a checkout setup exhibits when no shipping options match the current order's conditions. Common fallback modes include showing a default option, showing all options, or showing an error message prompting the customer to contact support.

Free Delivery Label — Custom text displayed to the customer instead of "€0.00" or "Free" when a shipping option has a price of zero. For example, "Free delivery" or "Complimentary shipping". Set per shipping option and per locale for multilingual storefronts.

Fulfillment — The process of picking, packing, and dispatching an order from a warehouse. In Shipit, fulfillment settings on a shipping option control special dispatch behaviours such as return shipment generation, COD instructions, and return freight document inclusion.

Locale — A language and region identifier used to serve translated content. Shipit uses IETF language tags such as sv (Swedish), fi (Finnish), en (English), de (German), and nl (Dutch). Translations on shipping options are keyed by locale so customers see names and descriptions in their own language.

Outdoor Locker — A type of pickup point: an unmanned, automated parcel locker installed in an outdoor location such as a supermarket car park or petrol station forecourt. Accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, regardless of opening hours.

Parcel — A package preset that defines the default box dimensions (length, width, height) and maximum weight used when requesting carrier rates. Associating a parcel preset with a shipping option ensures rate calculations and label generation use consistent package data.

Parcel Locker — A type of pickup point: an automated locker, typically located inside a building such as a shopping centre, apartment lobby, or post office. Access may be restricted to the building's opening hours. Distinguished from an outdoor locker by its indoor or enclosed location.

Pickup Point — A physical location where a customer can collect their parcel instead of having it delivered to their home address. Shipit supports four pickup point types: service points (staffed shops), parcel lockers (indoor automated), outdoor lockers (unmanned, always open), and letter boxes (residential or building-level delivery points for small flat items such as envelopes or thin packages that don't require a staffed handover).

Pickup Point Listing Mode — A setting on a shipping option that controls how multiple pickup point types are presented to the customer in checkout. Options include showing all types in a combined list, showing them in separate grouped sections, or showing only one type.

Priority — A numeric value on a rule that determines the order in which rules are evaluated. Rules with higher priority numbers are evaluated first. When two rules could both affect the same shipping option, the higher-priority rule runs first and its result may influence what the lower-priority rule acts upon.

Provider Context — The structured data payload that Shipit assembles and sends to the checkout provider after evaluating all shipping options and rules. It contains the final list of options, their prices, descriptions, and any provider-specific metadata needed to render the checkout.

Rebate — A discounted price displayed alongside a crossed-out original price, signalling to the customer that they are saving money. In Shipit, a rebate is displayed by setting the regular_fee field on the shipping option (shown when the Show rebate option is enabled). The displayed price is the current price; the crossed-out price is the regular_fee value.

Return Freight Document — A pre-generated return shipping label included with the outbound shipment. Enabling this on a shipping option instructs Shipit to generate a return label alongside the outbound label so the customer can use it if they need to send the parcel back.

Return Shipment — A shipping option configured to generate a return label rather than an outbound label. When a customer selects a return shipment option and completes checkout, Shipit creates a shipment addressed back to the merchant's warehouse, enabling the customer to book a return at the point of purchase.

Rule — A condition-and-action pair attached to a shipping option. Rules are evaluated automatically on every checkout request. A rule fires when its conditions are met, triggering its action — such as hiding the option, changing its price, or updating its display name.

Rule Action — The "THEN" part of a rule: what Shipit does when the rule's conditions are satisfied. Common actions include enable_method, disable_method, modify_method_price, hide_parcel_locker, hide_outdoor_parcel_locker, enable_limited_quantities, and enable_dangerous_goods. Each action type has its own configuration parameters.

Service Area — A geographic restriction on a checkout setup that limits which destinations it serves. A service area can be defined by country codes, postcode ranges, or a combination of both. Checkout requests from outside the service area will not match the setup.

Service Code — A machine-readable, URL-safe identifier for a shipping option, unique within a checkout configuration. Examples: home-delivery-standard, parcel-locker-express, return-standard. Service codes are used internally and by integrations; they are not shown to customers.

Service Point — A type of pickup point: a staffed physical location such as a post office branch, newsagent, or dedicated parcel shop. Service points have fixed opening hours and a member of staff who hands over the parcel and checks the customer's ID if required.

Shipit Catalog — The curated list of carrier services available to connect to your shipping options. Each entry in the catalog represents a specific service from a specific carrier (e.g., PostNord MyPack Home, DHL Parcel Connect) and lists its supported capabilities such as COD, return labels, and add-ons.

Shipping Option — A delivery method displayed to the customer in checkout, such as "Home Delivery", "Parcel Locker", or "Express Next Day". Each shipping option is connected to a carrier service, has a base price, and can have rules, translations, and pickup settings attached to it.

Tag — A freeform label attached to a shipping option for internal organisational purposes. Tags are not shown to customers and have no effect on checkout behaviour. They are useful for filtering and searching options in the Shipit dashboard, and for grouping options by team, campaign, or carrier.

Tax Strategy — The method Shipit uses to apply tax to a shipping option's price. Options include auto (Shipit determines the correct rate based on the destination country's tax rules), eu_standard (applies the EU standard VAT rate), and custom (you specify an explicit tax rate).

Translation — A locale-specific override for a shipping option's name and description. When a customer's locale matches a translation, they see the translated text instead of the default. Translations allow a single shipping option to display correctly in multiple languages without duplicating the option itself.

Weight Tier — A pricing band that changes the shipping price based on the total weight of the cart. For example: 0–5 kg at €4.90, 5–15 kg at €7.90, over 15 kg at €12.90. Multiple weight tiers can be defined on a single shipping option; Shipit selects the applicable tier at checkout based on the cart's calculated weight.
