TL;DR

Use a carrier template if one exists for your carrier — it pre-fills the correct service, pickup settings, and listing mode. If no template fits, configure the option from scratch using the steps below. Either way, add a rule afterwards to hide parcel lockers for heavy orders that will not fit in a standard locker compartment.

Method A: Using a template (recommended)

Templates are pre-built shipping option configurations provided by Shipit for common carriers. When a template exists for your carrier, it is the fastest and most reliable way to set up a pickup point option because all the carrier-specific settings are already correct.

Available pickup point templates include:

TemplateCarrierPoint types included
Posti PostipakettiPosti (Finland)Parcel lockers and service points
Matkahuolto LahellaMatkahuolto (Finland)Service points
PostNord Pickup ParcelPostNord (Finland)Service points
PostNord MyPack CollectPostNord (Sweden)Service points
Bring ParcelBring (Sweden)Service points

Pickup from StoreGeneralYour own store
  1. Open your checkout setup and go to Shipping Options.
  2. Click "Add shipping option."
  3. In the template picker, search for your carrier by name — for example, type "Posti," "DHL," or "PostNord."
  4. Select a pickup point template from the results. Templates with pickup point capability are labelled accordingly.
  5. Review the pre-filled settings. The template configures the carrier service, point types, listing mode, and search method automatically. You do not need to change these unless you have a specific reason to.
  6. Set the price for this option, or enter 0 for free pickup.
  7. Click Save.

After saving, place a test order using a real customer address to confirm that nearby pickup points appear correctly.

Method B: Configuring from scratch

Use this approach when no template exists for your carrier, or when you need settings that differ from any available template.

  1. Open your checkout setup and go to Shipping Options.
  2. Click "Add shipping option."
  3. Close or skip the template picker and choose to start with a blank option.
  4. Enter a name that is clear to customers — for example, "Pick up near you" or "Collect from a locker or post office."
  5. Select your carrier service from the carrier service picker. The carrier service must support pickup point delivery — check with your carrier if you are unsure.
  6. Open the Pickup section and toggle on "Supports pickup points." This is required for any pickup point settings to take effect.
  7. Toggle on "Show pickup point list." This makes the list of nearby locations appear at checkout. Optionally also toggle on "Show pickup point map" to add a map view alongside the list.
  8. Under point types, select which types of location to include. Your options are service points (staffed counters), parcel lockers (indoor automated), and outdoor parcel lockers. Leave the selection empty to include all available types.
  9. Set the pickup point limit. This controls how many nearby locations the customer can see. The default of 10 is suitable for most stores. Consider raising this for customers in rural areas where fewer options are nearby.
  10. Set "Search by" to either postal code or address. Postal code is faster; address is more precise. Start with postal code unless you have a specific reason to use address search.
  11. Set the listing mode. Choose "Combined" to show all point types in a single list sorted by distance, or "Separate by type" to group locations into sections by type (for example, "Service Points" and then "Parcel Lockers").
  12. Set the price for this option, or enter 0 for free pickup.
  13. Click Save.

If the option saves but no pickup points appear during testing, the most likely cause is that the carrier service you selected does not support pickup point delivery. Contact your carrier or select a different service.

Adding a rule: hide parcel lockers for heavy orders

Standard parcel lockers have a maximum weight and size capacity. If a customer selects a parcel locker for a heavy order, the carrier may not be able to place the parcel in the locker. Adding a rule to hide lockers for heavy orders prevents this problem automatically.

This rule applies after the carrier returns the list of nearby pickup points — it filters what the customer sees at checkout.

  1. Open the shipping option you just created.
  2. Go to the Rules section and click "Add rule."
  3. Enter a name for the rule — for example, "No lockers for heavy orders."
  4. Set the action to "Hide parcel locker."
  5. Add a condition: select "Cart weight," the operator "greater than," and the value 30000. This value is in grams, so 30000 equals 30 kg. Adjust this threshold to match the weight limit of the lockers your carrier uses.
  6. Set "Conditions match" to "All" — all conditions must be met for the rule to apply.
  7. Set the priority to 10. Rules with higher priority numbers are evaluated first.
  8. Make sure "Active" is toggled on.
  9. Click Save.

If you also want to hide outdoor parcel lockers for the same reason, add a second action of "Hide outdoor parcel locker" to the same rule, or create a separate rule following the same steps.

Verifying your setup

After saving both the shipping option and the rule, test the following scenarios:

  1. Place a test order with a light item (under 30 kg) and a real delivery address. Confirm that the pickup point selection step appears, that the list shows up to your configured limit of locations, and that both service points and parcel lockers are present.
  2. Place a test order with a total cart weight above 30 kg (adjust this to match your rule threshold). Confirm that the pickup point selection step still appears, but that parcel lockers are no longer shown — only service points should remain.
  3. If you enabled the map view, confirm that the map displays the same locations as the list.

Common mistakes

Selecting a carrier service that does not support pickup points The option will appear at checkout but return no locations. The carrier service itself must have pickup point capability enabled on the carrier's side.

Forgetting to enable "Show pickup point list" The "Supports pickup points" master toggle must be on and "Show pickup point list" must also be on. Without the list toggle, the pickup point selection step does not appear to customers even though the feature is technically enabled.

Setting the point limit too low A limit of 1 or 2 can leave customers with no convenient option, particularly in areas where pickup point coverage is sparse. The default of 10 balances choice with usability.

Mixing up global exclusion settings with rules The exclude toggles (exclude parcel lockers, exclude outdoor parcel lockers, exclude service points) are permanent — they always apply. Rules are conditional. If you have excluded parcel lockers using the global toggle, adding a "Show parcel locker" rule will not make them reappear. Use global exclusions only when a point type is never appropriate for the option.

Not testing with a real address Pickup point availability varies by location and carrier. A test order using a real postcode or address from your main market is the only reliable way to confirm that points are returned and displayed as expected.
